Methe saraswathi vare boothi papravi thaamasi |
Niyadhe thwam prasideche Manasa devi namosthude ||

Manasa Devi temple at Bilva parvat is a holy devi sthal. According to the legend of Dakshayani the forehead from her dismembered burnt body fell at this place and so it became one of the sacred Devi-sthals of India. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story)
This devi was conceived by the sage Kashyappa in his mind.('manas' means mind) She was always thinking of paramatma Sarveswara. She is also the giver of whatever one wishes in the mind. Hence this devi is called Manasa devi
This devi did penance for three million years and become like a wood. At that time Sri Parameswara called her 'vishva poojitha'.She is vishnu's maya. She saved many serpants from being consumed in pareekshit's yaga. So her name is 'Nagabakini' also.
Any one reciting her 12 Nama's given below every day will be saved from every kind of accidents specially from snake bites.

9.Aastheega Matha         10Vishahari         11.Visvapoojitha         12.Mrutha sanjeevini

The purpose of devi's incarnation:
Once King Parikshits son Janamejayan performed a big sarpa yaga killing all snakes in the world because his father died of snake bite . One snake called Dakshan (who killed parikshit) went to Indra and implored his protection. All the sages came to know of this and tried to kill Indira along with the snake Dakshan.Indra surendered to Sri Manasa Devi.
Devi went to the place where the yaga was being performed and told Janame-jayan to stop the killing of the snakes as that was a sin. She told Janamejayan "your father died because of his fate. For that you can do nothing You should be a protecter and not a distroyer. You should stop taking revange not only on the snakes but on any creature".Janamejayan bowed to the Devi. Immediatly they stopped the yaga. Indra and Dakshan praised Devi because she saved them.. Devi gave her blessings to all of them and said If any one thought of her and recited her 12 nama's she would save them from any danger..
She went to kailash and she did pooja to lord Siva who taught 'Ashtakshara lakshimi beeja' ( 8 letterd Lakshmi manthra) to the Devi and ordered her to go to pushkara kshetra. Devi went to puskara and did penance for many millions of years. Later she got boons from Sri Krishna, Rudra, Manus, and sages. In due course all people came to worship Sri Manasa devi.
According to Brahma's (creater) order Sage Jaratgaru married her. One day Sage Jaratkaru did meditation for a long time. He was tired and he over-slept in the after-noon.According to the holy books (vedhas) sages had to do their daily prayers at the appointed hour other-wise they would become demons. Hence Sri Manasa devi woke him up because he had to do his evening prayer before the sunset. The sage did not realise this the devi's good intentions. As soon as he woke up he cursed her for disturbing his sleep. Devi tried to explain to him but he did not listen. She was afraid of his curse and she prayed to the Sun god and Sandyadevi.(Sandyadevi is the Sun god's shakthi). Sun with sandyadevi appeared before the sage and said to him that Devi Manasa was very sincere to him and It was not good to curse her. They said She woke him up only because he had to do his evening prayers. Hearing this from sun god sage Jaratgaru was mollified. However he left his wife Devi Manasa and went to do penance again.
Devi Manasa was very sad. Sun and Sandhya devi went to Jaratgaru and told him that there would be no use of doing penance without having a son. Hence they ordered him to go to his wife. Jaratgaru with his power touched his wife Manasa devi's stomach and blessed her with a son. But the sage left his wife all the same. On an auspicious day Manasa devi gave birth a male child. He grew up as a very truthful boy and so all the sages praised him
Whoever worships Sri Manasa Devi in dhakshi-nayanam or on a panchami day or even every day she will certainly save them from all accidents and from all diseases.
