Devi Kowsiki at Vindyachalam

Yaa devi sarva boodeshu thushti roopena samsthitha |
Namasthasyei Namasthasyei Namasthasyei namo namaha ||

Kowsiki devi Vindya peeth one of the 'Sakthi-sthals' in Utter-pradesh is situated at Vindyachala hill 10 kilo meters from Meerjapur. Of the seven hills this is an important one. The Devi's name is Nanda-devi. She is also called Vindya-vasini. The Bairav here is called as Punya-bajanan. According to the legend of Dakshayani the left heel from her dismembered burnt body fell at this place and so became one of the 51 sacred Devi-sthals of India. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story)
Another upa-devi peetam (minor peetam) called Gowri peetam because Sati devi's wristband fell in this place is also here. The devi is Mahatva Mangala-Gowri.
Once all devas were ill-treated by the two demons called Sumba and Nisumba. Deprived of their functions and expelled from the heaven by these two great demons all the gods thought of the invinsible devi Gatyayini.
Hence they all prayed to the Devi. When they were in their prayers Devi Parvathi who was passing by to have a dip in the river Ganga listened to the prayers of the devas. They implored of the Devi Gatyayani to save the Devas from the two demons.
Then an auspicious Goddess sprung forth from Parvathi. Because that Devi came out of Parvathi's sheath (Kosa) she is glorified as Kau-siki ( Kowsiki ) in all the worlds. She said: "This hymn (prayers) is addressed to me by the assembled gods set at naught by Sumba and Nisumba" and destroyed the two demons and their armies. The Saptha Sati speaks in detail about the annihilation of the two brothers and their followers.
Another legend says that Kowsiki devi is the same Yoga-maya who in Krishna avathar slipped out of Khamsa's hand when he tried to kill her . It is well known that Khamsa killed all the children of Devaki - Yoga-maya and Krishna alone survived.
Devi eternally incarnates again and again in different names in different  peetas to protect the world from evil.
