Mahakalika devi sakthi peet in Pawagadh is at a distance of about 40 kms from the city of Vadodra in Gujarat. This is a popular pilgrimage centre and a tourist centre as well.
According to the Dakshayani legend the right toe of her dismembered and burnt body fell at this place. Hence this is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peetas. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story) According to popular legend long time ago the area where the hill stands now was a deep valley. At its ridge sage Viswamitra's hermitage was located. The sage had a cow called 'Kamadhenu' - the giver of inexhaustible supply of milk and anything one would wish for. Once while grazing at the brink the cow slipped and fell into the valley. Being unable to climb up the steep sides the cow filled up the valley with its milk and swam home. Learning about the mishap and to prevent a possible recurrence the sage prayed to god to fill up the valley. Answering the prayers god created a hill there which not only filled up the valley and but one quarter of it stood out. This hill came to be known as 'Pavagadh'.
It is said that this hill itself is in the shape of a Kalika Yantram. On the hill top, the ancient famous temple of Mahakalika is located. The entire area is mainly forest area and bedecked by nature with beautiful landscape.
The rocks appear to be of light yellow color with a tinge of red like a Champaka flower. Thus the town got the name Champaner. This town has a rich but little known history. Pre-historic stone tools have been found here. The area is of great archaeological importance. This town is over 1000 years old.
Goddess Mahakalika has been fulfilling the prayers of millions of devotees for years and years.
