Shyamala Devi shrine is in the the Kali devi temple at the centre of shimla.
According to the legend of Dakshayani the the left thumb from her dismembered burnt body fell at this place and so became one of the 51 sacred Devi-sthals of India. Another legend has it that the upper dress of Dakshayani fell at this spot. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story) The story goes that the image of Shyamala devi was in a small temple. An Englishman had the idol thrown into a pond nearby and occupied the temple making it his kitchen. That night he experienced apparitions of some horse-men spearing him repeatedly. Frightened by this he had the idol re-installed in a new temple.
The main temple was built in 1845.
The temple is adorned with seven metal bells which ring at regular intervals during the main aarti.
