Sri Gatyayani devi at Brindavan

Yedhatye Vadhanam Sowmyam Lochanatraya Booshitam |
Padunaha Sarvabeedhipyaha Gatyayini Namosthude ||

Devi Sri Gatyayani temple in Brindavan on the banks of river Jamuna is another important holy Devi-sthal. Hair from the dismembered burnt body of Devi Sri Dakshayani fell at this place and hence this place is considered one of the 51 sacred devi sthals. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story) This is also called 'Mukthi-peeth' 'Maha-vidhya-peeth' and 'Radha-peeth'.
Her consort Rudhra is here as 'Bhudhesan'.
The legends of Brindavan dates back to ancient times as the place where Sri Krishna spent his child-hood playing pranks.
Shrimad Bhagwatam mentions that Lord Vishnu wished 'Yogmaya' , his ’Sakti‘, to be born in Gokulam as the daughter of Nandgopa and Yashodha before He himself was to take avathar there as Sri Krishna for re-establishment of righteousness in this world. The story about how yogamaya eluded the sword of Kamsa when he was about to cut her into pieces in the prison cell where his sister 'Devaki' was incercerated, is well-known.
Radha the consort of Sri Krishna is Yoga-maya. She is also called 'Uma' and 'Gathyayani'. The Devi is here as the 'Kumari-sakthi granting salvation to all her devotees.
The Gopis of Brindavan worshipped  Devi Katyayani at the Peeta on the banks of Yamuna. They performed 'raja-leela' as a boon given to them by Rama (Krishna's previous incarnation) in their previous births.
Though the legends of 'Dakshayani' and Lord Krishna are centuries old the present temple and 'ashta-loka' ( 8 metals) idol are only recently consecrated.
The 'Devi Mahatmiya' - the 700 hymns in praise of the Devi is recited every-day here. The two 'navarathris' are important events in this temple as in every Devi shrine.
