Ambaji devi Sakthi peet in Gujarat is situated on the Arasur hills in the south west end of the Aravalli hills in northern Gujarat near Mt Abu. According to the legend of Dakshayani the heart from her dismembered burnt body fell at this place and so became one of the sacred Devi-sthal of India. Another legend has it that the left breast of Dakshayani fell at this spot. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story)
Devi Ambaji is also known as 'Amba Bhavani'. There is no idol for the devi in this temple. This shows the antiquity of this 'holy sthal' as idol worship in Hinduism originated later in its course. There are inscriptions from as early as the 8th century mentioning Ambika.Goddess Ambaji is represented here by a triangular "vishwa-yantra" with "sri" inscribed in the centre. Also located here is the Koteshwar Mahadev shrine.
Built of the finest quality of marble, the temple of Ambaji is recognized as one of the original 'Shakti Pitas'. There are inscriptions from the 16th century onwards here.
The mythical river Saraswati is supposed to have re-emerged from the ground here and again disappeared into the desert of Kutch. Ancient epics mention these beliefs associated with the river Saraswati.
Legend has it that Krishna worshipped Siva and Ambika at Ambikavana and that Rukmani worshipped Ambika here prior to her marrying Krishna. Legend also says that child krishna had his tonsure ceremony in Ambaji temple - another indication of the antiquity of this temple.
During the holy month of bathrapada,(Tamil month Puratasi English Oct Nov) devotees throng here by full-moon day (Poonam). Nearby there is a steep hill whose peak is supposed to bear the footprints of the goddess.
