Devi Mangalagowri at Gaya

Mangale mangaladhare mangalye mangalapradhe
mangalartham mangalesi mangalyam dehime sadhaa

Mangala-gowri is the deity in the shakthi peeth in Gaya which is predominantly a Vaishnavite centre. Mangalanath is the consort. According to the legend of Dakshayani the breast from her dismembered burnt body fell at this place and so it became one of the 51 sacred Devi-sthals of India. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story) Some accounts classify this place as a 'upa-peetam'- peetam of lesser importance. But because a body part of the S
ati devi is said to have fallen here this should be considered a 'maha-peetam'.
Mangalagowri is worshipped in the form of a breast symbol to signify nourishment and motherly care .
This temple is very popular. It is a small brick temple facing east, built on the top of the Mangalagowri hill. A flight of steps and a road lead to the temple. The sanctum houses the symbol of the Devi. It also has some fine carvings. In front of the temple there is a mantap and and a pit for sacrificial fire
Mangalagowri temple in Gaya is an ancient one. Puranas and tantric texts mention about this temple. Animal
sacrifices have been offered here.
