Devi Sthanupriya at Kurukshetram

Sthanupriye devi Sarva Jana rakshaki Dharma |
stabana hare devi Darmadevi Namosthude ||

Sthanupriye Devi is the deity in Kurukshetra. Sri Devi Maha Bagavatham mentions this as an important sacred devi sthalam. Devi Parvathi is here as 'Sthanupriyai' and her consort Siva as 'Asvanath'.
According to the legend the right hand of the dismembered burnt body of Dakshayani fell at this place and so it became one of the 51sacred Devi-sthalams. Another legend says Devi Gatyayini's feet fell here. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story) This is called 'Ubadesa-peetam' as Lord Krishna revealed 'Bhagavat-Gita' to Arjun here. The kurkshertra is called 'Darmakshetra' as the Maha-Baratha war was fought to destroy evil forces and establish righteousness (dharma). In the Kurkshetra war Arjun saw the huge armies of soldiers and his relatives arrayed on both sides for mutual slaughter. He was deeply disturbed and Sri Krishna spoke to Arjun in order to quell his agitation and remove the doubts.
Sri Krishna's exhortation to Arjun at this juncture is the 'Sri Bhagavad-Gita' Which is enshrined in millions of hearts as the words of God and is acknowledged by all as one of the supreme treasures of human literature.
Its gospel of devotion to duty, life without attachment or desire of reward has shown the way of life for all human, rich, poor, learned or ignorant who have sought for light in the darkness of life.
Kunthi (the Pandava's Mother) was a devotee of devi Sthanupriya and Aswanath. When Beeshma was on his death-bed Arjun shot an arrow into the ground and created a spring to quench the thirst of his grand father Beeshma. That spring is called Bana-Ganga
Solar eclipse is a festival day here.
