Devi Sri Jwalamuki at Jwalaju

Devi Jwalamukhi is in the form of a flame - a flickering flame. Jwalaju in Himachal pradesh became a holy Devi sthal - the abode of Jwalamukhi because Dakshayani's tongue fell at this place. (refer to 'Yoga-agni' in 'Abodes of devi' for background story)Normally in a sanctum-sanatorium of a temple we see idols of stone or metal. But here we see a flame. This flame is not burning with a wick and oil. It is a natural flame in mixed colours of green and blue.It is there for generations. This abode of Devi is a very famous holy place.
There is an interesting legend about this place.
Once a very devoted person was taking some flowers and some offerings to the temple to do pooja. A Mogul  emperor who was passing by called that person and enquired where he was going and what for he was taking the flowers etc. The devotee told the Emperor that he was going to do puja to Devi Jwalamukhi. The Emperor taunted the poor devotee and asked if the Devi was very powerful. The devotee said "yes your majesty ; certainly she is very powerful and there is no doubt".
Immediately the Emperor threw a sword on to a horse standing near by which grievously  injured the animal. The Emperor asked "O priest now ask your Devi to give life to the dead horse".
The devotee was very upset and said "Your majesty, certainly she will give life to the dead horse and you are going to see the wonder".
With the kings permission he went to the temple and very ardently prayed to Devi. Devi Jwalamukhi appeared before him and agreed to give life back to the horse and did accordingly.
The Emperor was not satisfied with this. He went to the temple and tried to put off the 'jwala' (flame) by closing it with some steel plates. But he failed to put it off.
Again he ordered his soldiers to divert a river 4 kilometre away on to the temple. But even the river water could not put off the flame and the Emperor was defeated in that effort also.
The emperor realized his folly and offered a golden umbrella to Devi. But Devi did not accept this offering and the umbrella was immediately damaged. Even today it is said, the broken umbrella is on exhibition in the temple.
We come across the 'nama' of Jwalamukhi in 'Lalitha sahasranamam' ( 1008 names) This is one of the fifty one sakthi peetams (abodes)
. Mahakali, Annapoorni,Chandi and Vindhiyavasini are also there in the form of flames in this temple .
On the right side of the sanctum-sanatorium there is a place called kokretippa where there is a tank 3' x 3' size. The water in this tank looks like it is boiling with bubbles but is very cool when touched.
The priest decorating the devi with ear studs, bangles, anklets, metti, crown, chains etc to put devi to sleep at night is very beautiful sight. Though there is no image the devi looks real.
For any one on a pilgrimage a visit to Jwalamukhi temple is a must.
